Smiles hard drive was indeed external, but even after repeated attempts to back up Dire's system, his lack of any significant storage space left him just another end user with a useless floppy disc.

Don't encourage him--RLO is going to see this as just another example of our juvenile behavior getting out of hand...nonetheless, I have to agree--I think he pretty much takes the Forum Credenza home for that one!

Forum Credenza?

Last thing I need is another piece of Roman furniture.

Hmmm, maybe he should've only been awarded the Forum Chiffarobe? At least that would place him squarely in the land of Atticus Finch; there's someone that could probably whip us boys into line, behaviorally speaking.

On the hand, maybe we should just be shot, like the rabid dog?

Ya know, I think we've talked about that movie half a dozen times here at the Forum over the years. Defn a great one (ahem, somehow, I always think "movie" not "book" for this; Peck and all...).

Yup, and despite what he says, it wasn't even the 5 & 1/2 inch type...only 3 & 1/4 inches, in the slightly (!) harder format of the old floppies...

Ahem.

[BTW, I just saw my pile of the big black floppies of old, and those brought back memories, I'll tell you...recall when running some software you had to put in the one disk, then the other, and so on? Actually req'ing a "dual drive 8088" IBM if I have my #'s straight?]

Yup, you've got that old IBM with a mono green screen blinking at you. It wasn't that long ago... maybe 1985-1988. We had one of those things running day and night for years for uploads to our slide service bureau. I believe it had 640k RAM and 40MB hd!

The way I see it, with the average post you can expect maybe 4-5 responses before seeing the discussion branch off into territory you never could have imagined at the start. This is not to say we are not able to stay on point some of the time, for I have seen quite a few threads that really manage to maintain a core idea from top to bottom. And even in this rather demented mutation seen here, we have at least stayed true to the original computer theme.

It was a compatibility issue. Dire kept repeating an error message, "To begin, please insert hard-disc to drive B."

Smi2les kept yelling, "I already inserted my disc!!".

I think he forgot to initialize it.

Catch a little tube? Well, not if Dire...

I was about to say something at once pithy and depraved, but I though it best this thread stop its descent into to the sewer.

The Vulgate?

Didn't Jean Luc Picard defeat them in season 3?

Or was that the Vulva?

I believe you are correct. And, Capt. Kirk wiped out the Klingons that were around Uranus.

I agree with SDH, Flow--you really topped it off with that one. I can barely set these lines up; fortunately, the likes of you, SDH & Rob are around to hit homers off my poor pitching!

My apologies, Jim, for making light of your problem--I am such a computer geek I couldn't even relate to it...and to you, RLO, for once again assisting in the downward spiral of thread. Hope you got a laugh or two out of some of it.

Haha it's cool, man, I'm getting a kick out of where this has gone actually. I suppose a guy who makes a post about losing all his bookmarks probably comes across as someone who takes things too seriously, but I'm totally not, I don't at all mind a good thread hijack or joke at my expense. "Facebook with a soundtrack" in particular cracked me up.

It's not the end of the world, it's more all the time I'd spent organizing everything that I hated losing. Lots and lots of links to shows I wanted to stream and/or download, a whole bunch of links to torrents I've been meaning to get to on dime, LL, WT, Trader's Den, etc. All kinds of rapidshare and yousendit links, youtube links, stuff like that. I had folders for all my favorite artists, with subfolders for torrents, interviews, articles, pictures, you name it (my Floyd section is the one I particularly hated to lose, Floyd music and info isn't quite as organized on the internets as GD stuff is). Then all the easy to replace but time consuming ones like here, my email, various message boards, etc.

At any rate, I appreciate the links people have posted. Long story of how I lost it, but I intentionally clicked on "permanently delete," so the recycle bin is not an option. I also tried running a system restore, but that didn't work either. I'm at the acceptance part of the grief cycle now. Just gotta remind myself how 10 years ago I'd have never even imagined I would have had all that music and information and such all categorized and one simple click away, and how I managed to get on with life just fine back then. It still sucks though.
